Leftists Lose It

Young woman reacts to Trump win

Driving through Portland, Maine with my wife the day after the big election, I expected to see black crepe hanging from windows. I didn't, but there were women holding signs offering hugs to distraught liberals downtown. Hundreds gathered there to chant “Not my president!” and “Keep hate out of Maine!” They were peaceful though, unlike they were in that other Portland across the country.
From Portland Press Herald

Back and forth we go each week between rural Maine and urban Maine — from the mountains to Greater Portland — from red Maine to blue Maine for a couple of days, then back. It’s quite a contrast. In the mountains people know me, but in the city they have no idea that I’m a conservative who voted for Trump. I can observe leftists in their native habitat where they feel safe. Sometimes I feel like Jane Goodall.
Downtown Portland, Maine (PPH)

Downtown Portland, Oregon (from London Daily Mail)

In the mountains, Trump won; in the city, Hillary did. Maine is divided between rural and urban and the world views of the former are strikingly different from those of the latter. On the coast of Maine they like marijuana, Hillary, and gun control — in the interior, none of those — just like the rest of America. Gun control in the form of increased background checks was defeated, but marijuana was legalized. Leftists in Greater Portland prevailed there and when I was a leftist, I smoked it too. After giving it up more than thirty years ago, I moved right. Was that causative? I don’t know, but it correlated. Leftist billionaire George Soros has always marijuana legalization initiatives. Does he believe smoking weed moves people left? It would seem so.
Leftist Billionaire George Soros

The Portland Press Herald published several maps of Maine — one each showing towns voting for Hillary vs Trump, Yes vs No on marijuana, and Yes vs No on gun control. All three were virtually identical. The blue/red or left/right divide if you will, runs between the city and the country in Maine and in the whole of our country as well.
On the car radio, I heard news of my alma mater — the University of Massachusetts Lowell — where the “Office of Multicultural Affairs” sent out a notice the day after the election:

“…While it may take some time to fully take in all the recent events, please also know that the OMA office is here for you. Our UMass Lowell community is here for you. Do not hesitate at all to come in or ask for support. Today there is a Post-election self-care session from 12-4 pm in Moloney. The event will include cookies, mandalas, stress reduction techniques and mindfulness activities. Counseling and Health Services will also be available…”

When I lived there in the 1970s, Lowell was a tough city hosting the New England Golden Gloves every year. Evidently it’s being repopulated with snowflake stoners.
The Huffington Post reported on a post-mortem meeting of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), during which a young committeeman identified only as “Zach” flipped out at the DNC’s truth-challenged Chairwoman Donna Brazile. Claiming her ineptitude enabled Trump to win, he frantically exclaimed:

“You and your friends will die of old age and I’m going to die from climate change! You and your friends let this happen, which is going to cut 40 years off my life expectancy!”

Poor baby. I sincerely doubt Brazile really believes in anthropogenic climate change, but doom-sayer Democrat propaganda has clearly terrified this young leftist.
On the bright side, several leftist celebrities have promised to leave the country if Trump is elected and I hope they do. The list includes: The allegedly Reverend Al Sharpton, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Whoopi Goldberg, Lena Dunham, and several others whose names are unfamiliar to me. To them, I say: “Bye-bye! Don’t let the doorknob catch you in the ass!” But, alas, I doubt they actually will leave us. The allegedly Reverend Al was back on MSNBC Wednesday morning. Maybe he booked a late flight or something. Maybe he hasn’t finished packing, but I have a feeling he’s going to stick around. If I’m wrong, I hope he pays the millions he owes the IRS before leaving.
In his Veteran’s Day post, columnist Mark Steyn wrote: “This week American universities, now among the most expensive yet worthless institutions on the planet, have held mass ‘cry-ins’ to protest Tuesday's election. At the University of Michigan, sufferers from PTSD (Post-Trumptastic Stress Disorder) were consoled with Play-Doh and coloring books. Can you imagine any of the teenagers who stormed the beaches of Normandy - boys who were men, and often five, six, seven years younger than today's elderly ‘students' - agreeing to participate in anything so ostentatiously self-indulgent as a 'cry-in' followed by free Play-Doh?”

No, I cannot, but as our new Nobel laureate Bob Dylan put it: “The times, they are a-changin’.”

This has been the happiest week of my life. Trump beat Clinton, it was the 241st Birthday of the United States Marine Corps, Veterans Day, Trumps win and the end of the Clintons.. all in one week. It was like an overload of "amazing". The icing on the cake is watching all these "safe-spacers" absolutely lose their collective shit. I didn't need play-doh, trauma dogs or crayons to sooth my delicate sensibilities.

Mr McLaughlin, I have nothing but respect for you and your profession, in fact I will say you were one of the best teachers I ever had. But I blame this foolishness on the educational system. It's failed. Who is teaching our children that it's OK to have a melt down, destroy public property, impede the flow of traffic ? Now they are calling for a "revolution" ummm do they not realize thier parents already voted away whatever gun rights they may have had ? What are you going to fight with ? Nerf guns ? Somebody didn't think this thru.

Now they are all talking about moving to Canada. Problem is, Canada does not want you.See the last time Canada was overrun with cowards & baby's was during the Vietnam war. Well they changed thier policies of immagration as a result.... is it me or does it seem like libs always shoot themselves in the foot ?

I'm waiting patiently for Jan 20th.. then Trump will release the hounds and stop this foolishness.. shit if you're going to protest, at least have a valid reason.. hurt feelings is NOT a valid reason.

Tom,

thanks for this insightful yet entertaining post. I personally didn't like Trump, and would have preferred almost any of the other Republican contenders to him. However, when faced with the choice of Trump v HCR, I knew I had to vote for him, possibly to save the country. When I read about the pathetic self obsessed cry babies, aka college students who might as well be in adult day care centers as institutes of higher learning, I know I made the right decision.

Fun column, and good comments following.

As a resident of Brunswick, I like to keep tabs on what goes on at Camp Bowdoin, Home of the Social Justice Warfare Command, or as the warriors training there call it, Bowdoin College.

Reading the Friday Bowdoin Orient, the camp newspaper, was highly amusing, frightfully alarming, and totally informative. If this is 'the future' as represented by our brightest and best, we have problems beyond imagining to look forward to.

On the other hand, binky and blankie industries should be entering a growth phase.

So it turns out that a small minority of voters (27% of all eligible voters) were able to elect Mr. Trump as president. Yes, almost a million more people voted for Hillary, but the electoral college will get the last word. so we have to suck it up. The people spoke, but were shouted down by the “rigged” system and the electoral college. I use Trump's words here because I can just imagine the hysteria and ruckus that would have been raised had he won the popular vote but lost a close election. He still wouldn’t have conceded, but still be whining about how he was cheated.

The Democrats had it coming though. They could have gone with Sanders, who would have demolished Trump, but….shoulda, woulda, coulda…

And in the long run I think this may be a good thing. There would have been total gridlock in Washington. And the feelings of Trump supporters would only have got stronger and angrier with a Clinton win, and probably more violent and hateful. Look at what is happening with hate crimes with a Trump win. What would a loss have caused? Now the Trump supporters can see what happens now that they have their guy - no excuses. I think many are already a bit disappointed due to his changing (softening) his stance on several issues. Trump is far from an ideologue. I like that he said he is part of the Republican party, not the conservative party. I think we may actually have our first atheist President.

So, I hope for the best. May these four years not be too destructive.

The latest official count shows Trump winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote. I am happy with that. The cry babies have never had NO said to them and it shows. The colleges are creating this liberal thinking and it is time to put a stop to it. IF government quit the college loans the colleges would be it deep trouble and some would fail. Poor babies.

Peter said...

gaffer, where did you hear that Trump won the popular vote? 70news?

There is a real and factual result as to the popular vote. Hillary won it.

The most comprehensive vote-tracking analysis is published by David Wasserman of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. As of 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 14, according to Wasserman’s calculations, Clinton led Trump by 784,748 votes -- specifically, 61,422,098 for Clinton, 60,637,350 for Trump, and 6,691,311 for other candidates.

Listen to you harp on people for claiming they will go to Canada, but did you ever make fun of Bill O'Reiily, who said he would go to Ireland, or Rush Limbaugh saying he would go to Costa Rica, or countless others saying they would go to Australia or elsewhere, if Obama won?

And what is this glee I sense you and others are getting from seeing people heartbroken about the election? It seems as if, even more important than winning the election, seeing others lose and suffer was much more important. I am not all that familiar with the bible, but doesn't it say things like "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"? and "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles,"? And how about the whole "do unto others..." thing? I am not sensing a lot of Christian values here.

Anonymous said...

Christian values? Do you think that for a second Christ would have tolerated Trump's sentiments?

And to Gaffer...the "Official" count has Trump ahead? What is this "official" source of which you speak?

I normally vote Democratic. This election I was a closet Trump voter. Didn't want my friends to know. Here is why: too close to Wall St., damning corruption allegations, and a war hawk to boot. Trump is a flawed candidate but he was better on all these issues.

The animosity of the Left at the election results has been a disappointment. They view this as a referendum on hate and think they have the moral high ground. Of course, this election was not about hate. There were so many other issues at stake.

Anonymous said...

Yes, a lot of issues were at stake, but doesn't hiding your support let you know that deep down inside you know it is wrong, and are ashamed, that racism and bullying were not deal breakers?

I voted then went to bed early expecting to wake up to the same old corruption we've had for the last 8 years. The first hint I had that Trump had won was when I noticed the baristas at Starbucks the next morning were unusually quiet and some were in tears. For what I've seen so far, there were 3 major factors causing this stunning victory and I think these videos sum it up. The first video shows that Trump was not a bumbling buffoon but the marketing genius he is and Hillary's campaign was a strategic disaster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LibRNYJmZ-I&t=760s
But the biggest reason for Trump's victory was how democrats & liberals have behaved in the last few decades (Caution: The person is a flaming liberal so his language is quite vulgar). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLG9g7BcjKs

Anonymous said...

Oh, I'll give Trump the "marketing genius" all right. With the right marketing you can sell a shit sandwich to a zookeeper in an elephant cage. But it doesn't mean the sandwich should be bought.

As bad as Hillary's campaign was, even Glen Beck said voting for her over Trump was the morally right thing to do.

And certainly you are not suggesting that republicans and conservatives have acted any better over the last few decades!!!

Anyway, enjoy your sandwich.

Could not understand how anyone could vote for a criminal like Klinton, that so many did is quite disturbing. They must have enjoyed being complicit in the Obama/Bush crime family over the last 16 years.

There is little Rule of Law in this country, it has just become a Rule by Men. The powerful and connected are above prosecution for their crimes.

The Klinton Foundation is a corrupt criminal charity, for the benefit of its founders only and their pay for play contributors who now bought stock in a dead nag. Will Trump's DOJ investigate it and prosecute it's owners, highly unlikely.

The US Government is a corrupt and criminal organization also, can Trump turn it around, highly unlikely. At least we changed horses in mid stream. giddy up go daddy.

I agree with Mr. Ed, but I am still not biting that sandwich. I would rather have Bernie in the saddle, but even Johnson would have been tolerable.

Oh, and as a liberal, I very much enjoyed ted's last video as well!

Darn it. Lena Dunham just announced she's staying here after all. Barbara Streisand may be the only one actually going, I think. Cher is leading anti-Trump protests with Madonna. Do you think maybe Cher offered to help her keep her promise to give oral sex to every man who voted for Hillary? That shouldn't take too long though. Maybe next week she'll finally blast off.

Darn it. Bill O'Reilly never left for Ireland. And Rush is not off in Costa Rica. And double darn, Texas did not secede rather than be led by a black man.

I wonder where school children are getting these bullying ideas? Not only Trump himself, but supposed adult role models behaving childish, this site included.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/post-trump-victory-bullying-harassment-reported-schools/

Tom McLaughlin said...

Ok. I read the whole article, and it was all second and third-hand reports of alleged bullying reported by people who heard about it. Public school teachers (darn few conservatives there) surveyed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (No conservatives at all there).
CBS, which has long been an integral part of the leftist, mainstream media echo chamber, dutifully reports it.

In spite of their best efforts, the MSM could not determine the outcome of last week's election. Their shouts of "racism"; "Islamophobia"; and the rest are overused cries of "wolf!" They don't realize that no one's listening anymore. Most people recognize it for what it is: Democrat Tourette's Syndrome. The left needs a new script.

It's been less than one week since the election of Donald J. Trump, and there have been over 300 hate crimes reported all across America- many making direct reference to the incoming president or the election. It's happening in middle schools, universities, and places of worship; in businesses, on public transportation and on the street.
But nothing to see here, right? Just a peaceful nation in the wake of a fair and just election.
If you voted for Donald Trump, it's not enough to say "but I'm not one of the racist, misogynist, or xenophobic ones, I just wanted to make America great again." (Clearly going well so far). The ball is squarely in your court to speak up - loudly and often - against these acts of hate. If you don't speak up, your silence speaks volumes.

People are upset. There really is a cultural war in the U.S. Now that the far right wing conservatives have won, let's see if they'll keep their promises.

Cut off the medical insurance for 20 million people.

Make abortion illegal, even in cases where the woman's life is in danger. Many Catholic hospitals will transfer women who have a tubular pregnancy to other hospitals rather than terminate the pregnancy. A few women have died because hospitals have refused to treat them. http://www.politicususa.com/2013/02/08/catholic-hospitals-treating-pregnant-women-based-vatican-dogma.html This type of behavior will become the rule in some areas of the country rather than the exception and women will start to die needless deaths.

Pull out of NATO leaving Europe at the mercy of Russia.

Some happily married couples will no longer be married. Their children will suffer most when they lose medical coverage etc.

Deregulate banks to allow them to take as much risk with other peoples money as they want to. When some of these banks go out of business there will be no bailout and millions of people will lose their life savings.

Remove some of the environmental regulations that get in businesses way. We potentially could end up like China where living in some cities can cut your life expectancy by 10 to 20 years.

Eliminate the endangered species act allowing many more species to go extinct.

Eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency so that there will be no one at the federal level to enforce environmental laws.

Stop all new Muslims from entering the country. I have even heard some of the more extreme right wingers talking about throwing out all Muslims, even ones who have been here for generations. That is not likely but it is being talked about.

Eliminate the separation of church and state. This would allow businesses to discriminate against religions they don't like. At first it would be non-Christians. Later it would be if you were a member of the wrong Christian faith. Of major Christian denominations, Catholics would be in the most trouble nationally. They are widely hated throughout the bible belt.

The question is what kind of country do you want to live in? When you add up all of the changes that the far right wants to put in you end up with a country that looks a lot like India or maybe even a Christian version of Saudi Arabia.

One thing I keep hearing from Republicans is that the Obama administration is the most corrupt administration ever but I never hear any evidence to back it up.

I did find a list of political scandals on wikopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_political_scandals_in_the_United_States#2009.E2.80.932017_Barack_Obama_Administration

In administrations since 1970, Nixon, Reagan, and GW Bush II had the most scandals. G Bush I and Jimmy Carter had the least. President Obama was right about in the middle of the pack.

President Obama was not perfect but I really don't see any evidence that he was terrible. He took office during the worst recession since the great depression and left with the economy in decent shape by all indicators. He was never involved in any personal scandals.

I can well imagine a grandfather in the 50's blowing his cigarette smoke towards his granddaughters, and scoffing at the "science" of secondhand smoke being harmful, snorting "poor baby, terrified at doom-saying propaganda".

And it still continues today, in the form of climate change denial. Poor kids then. Poor kids now.

Anonymous said...

It drives many people absolutely crazy that they tried to pin so many scandals on Obama and yet none stuck, as none were real. As David Brooks said:

"The first and most important of these is basic integrity. The Obama administration has been remarkably scandal-free. Think of the way Iran-contra or the Lewinsky scandals swallowed years from Reagan and Clinton. We’ve had very little of that from Obama. He and his staff have generally behaved with basic rectitude."

Good column about this here:

Think we'll get some Trump scandals?

"The times they are a-changin'"? How so? I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I would bet it is going to be 4 years of politics as usual, but with an even nastier tone. Corruption will continue. More and more massive debt will build up. A little change is that we will be reverting back a bit to the olden days of more openly disparaging anybody that is different than you, but all in all still plundering along with the same 2 party rancid partisanship as usual.

Brian said...

Obama's approval rating is at 57% and climbing. I'm thinking it is people noticing the obvious differences in class between what they had and what they are getting. Anybody think that during Trump's entire 4 years (if he makes it that long) his approval ratings will not get within 10 points of Obama's? I am willing to stake $100 to win one jelly donut that they won't.

What's up? said...

To point out the wimpiness of those who fling out the crap and can't defend it, here are just some of the unanswered questions that you hid from:

And how about the whole "do unto others..." thing?

the "Official" count has Trump ahead? What is this "official" source of which you speak?

(concerning weed and alcohol) Which of these drugs is proven to be more harmful to both the individual and society as a whole?

"American universities, now among the most expensive yet worthless institutions on the planet"
What? I invite you to cite other references, but everything I found show US Universities dominating the international rankings.

Are you really in denial about this (uptick in hate crimes) happening???

"The times they are a-changin'"? How so?

Here is the sort of Supreme Court case that I worry about if President Trump gets to select one or two new justices in addition to filling the current vacant seat.

http://cjonline.com/news/2016-11-14/supreme-court-won-t-review-suit-claiming-science-standards-kansas-public-schools

A group of highly religious people wanted to eliminate the teaching of evolution and global warming in public schools because they felt that these issues violated the separation of church and state. To many highly religious people, everything is religion, even basic scientific facts. Everything that contradicts their particular religious beliefs must be because of a competing religion.

In this case, the Supreme Court denied certification so the case will not be heard. If Donald Trump succeeds in packing the Supreme Court with far right religious zealots, this could change. There have been many laws passed that try to make it illegal to teach evolution and global warming. With the right Supreme Court in place, religious indoctrination in public school will be the rule rather than the exception. If you happen to be Jewish, too bad. Your child will be forced to pledge to honor and love baby Jesus.

The following is a piece from chapelboro.com that agrees with my earlier stated opinion that this election will benefit Democrats in the long run. And this piece was written before the election, so it is not just sour grape thinking.

Why Democrats Could Benefit from a Trump victory
By D.G. Martin

Some, looking at the long term, might think that a Trump win next month would be a good thing. Not for the country in the short term, they would explain, but for the future of the country and the Democratic Party.

Just like Barack Obama’s win in 2008 hurt Democrats in elections later on, Trump’s victory would be terrible for the Republicans in future elections. Obama’s victory provoked a powerful Tea Party-like response from an angry segment of the public. These motivated crowds marched to the polls in 2010 and reversed Democratic gains, and retook control of Congress
But, if Trump were to win and become president, he would provoke anti-Trump and anti-Republican voters in the 2018 and 2020 elections, which would be monumental, surpassing even the anti-Obama reaction in 2010.

Arguably, a Trump win in 2016 would assure Democratic victories in 2018 and beyond.

On the other hand, if Clinton wins the presidency, history shows what could happen in 2020. No party in recent political history, except the Democrats’ run of five straight presidential election victories with Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, has been able to win four presidential elections in a row. After two or three terms of one party in the White House, the electorate wants a change.

It is just one more reason why loyal Republicans, with an eye on the future of their party, might hope for a big Democratic victory next month.
