Say What?

Don’t tell someone to “Man Up” at Duke University. It’s “offensive language” according to an official campaign on campus called “You Don’t Say.” There are black and white posters all around picturing three wimpy-looking young men cautioning against certain words or phrases. The first proclaims: “I don’t say ‘Man Up’ because the strongest people I know have cried in front of me, regardless of their age, gender or sex.” Masculinity isn’t politically correct on today’s campuses and it’s scary for 21st century progressives.

Another claims “I don’t say ‘Tranny’ because it’s insulting to transgender and genderqueer communities.” Wasn’t “queer” deemed offensive way back in the 20th century? Did the word get a progressive pardon I didn’t hear about? And I thought a “tranny” was a transmission in a truck or a car. Boy, am I out of touch. Hope it’s still okay to say “boy.”
Duke University shouldn’t be telling anyone what to say or not say, but it is anyway. The university lost all credibility when it hung its own lacrosse team out to dry based on the false charges of an unstable woman working as a stripper. They were obviously bogus, but because the accuser was a black female and the accused were “privileged” upper-middle-class white males, eighty-eight of Duke’s faculty signed a petition that presumed them guilty “regardless of the results of the police investigation,” as part of their introductory paragraph read.
No matter that the accuser was proven to have lied and is now in prison for murder. No matter that the district attorney was removed and disbarred for his conduct in the case. No matter that the university settled out of court for an undisclosed sum in a lawsuit by the falsely-accused players. None of the eight-eight progressive faculty members have apologized for what they did to those “privileged” white guys.
What difference does it make!

Other things we shouldn’t be saying include words like “bitch” and the slang word sometimes used to describe a cat or part of the female anatomy. Heck, my mother told me not to say those things fifty years ago. I’m okay with discouraging them on campus, but other words my mother hated are fine for progressives, especially that four-letter f-word. That’s ubiquitous as an adjective, noun, verb, or any other way you wish to say it. On other campuses are campaigns to eliminate the word “bossy” when describing any female. It’s just as bad as “bitch” in progressive nomenclature. My mother was okay with us saying “bossy” when describing my sister because she definitely was. You can’t say “illegal immigrant” either, even when describing someone who immigrated illegally. Many media outlets have banned it too, including the Associated Press.
Progressives believe that if they can control what words we use, they can control how we think. The “Gay and Lesbian Advocates And Defenders” or GLAAD, issued the 8th edition of its “Media Reference Guide” in 2010. They list as “Problematic” such phrases as “sex-change” or “pre-operative” or “post-operative.” They recommend “transition,” cautioning to “avoid over-emphasizing surgery when discussing transgender people.” Got that? And never say “bathroom bill” either because “it’s a term used by far-right extremists to oppose non-discrimination laws that protect transgender people. The term is geared to incite fear and panic at the thought of encountering transgender people in public restrooms. Use non-discrimination law/ordinance instead.”
So ladies: If you see a huge man who claims he’s a woman come into the ladies’ room, don’t even think about whether he’s had his you-know-what cut off or not. It’s offensive even to let that enter your mind.
GLAAD even calls the word “homosexual” offensive. The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press evidently agree because they’ve banned the word in their style manuals. To say “homosexual relationship” is “extremely offensive” because such a phrase is “frequently used by anti-gay extremists to denigrate gay people.” Neither can you say “gay agenda” because there isn’t any gay agenda - in spite of the what their Media Reference Guide obviously embodies. It’s offensive to say so, just like it’s offensive to describe an illegal immigrant as an illegal immigrant. Got it?
“Disordered” is defamatory too says GLAAD. So when the Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is both “intrinsically disordered” and “objectively disordered,” it’s on a collision course with GLAAD. The organization praises the Washington Post’s guidelines which caution against mentioning homosexuals in anything but a positive light, as in: “Describing a slaying, for instance, should suffice without referring to it as a homosexual slaying.” All these guidelines are voluntary, of course. If anyone might think about violating them, they should first think about what GLAAD did to Phil Robertson and Brendan Eich. If you don’t watch what you say, they’d be more than GLAAD to do it to you too.

DOWN WITH HOMOFASCISM!

Anonymous said...

Quick note about "queer." Yes, it used to be a derogatory term (and still is, in some places), but was reclaimed by the LGBTQ community in an attempt to take the power of the word away from bigots and empower themselves. It's similar to how the *n* word is still around in black communities.

I won't go into any of your other points, but I do find the power we associate words with fascinating.

Average--

You tried to be funny there, but ended up looking a fool.

Which is why I discriminate in my usage between homosexual, "gay", and faggot (not to be confused with the bundle of sticks used for heat/cooking fuel)-which is a fornication proclivity neutral word for integrity challenged expectation weasel through "usage".
Illegal Immigrants? What? No hyphen, somehow signaling "special exceptions expected here"? I agree!
The whole "illegal" part makes the word "immigration" an oxymoronic phrase in the first place. It was an "amelioration" of Illegal alien in the first place. IMHO, "wetback" applies to both Rio Grande AND the Atlantic Ocean.
(anon)"...but I do find the power we associate words with fascinating."
The ones we use, the ones that are "selectively" tolerated, or the ones deemed "OK to ALSO behave like a flaming C...(also gender neutral, via. "usage") over?

I'll not stand for that kind of comment on this blog. "Wicked True" has been here before under another assumed name with stuff that looks like it comes right out of KKK propaganda or Mein Kampf.

Go somewhere else please. You're not welcome here.

One responder posted an offensive comment about Jews. Another responder posted an offensive comment about gays. You removed one but kept the other. How is that different from the examples you cite in you column about people/institutions deciding what words and phrases are acceptable or unacceptable?

Anonymous said...

Yes, quite interesting how Tom discriminates about who it is "OK" to be offensive towards. Gay bashing is ok with him for some reason. (As it was with Ted Haggard).

Also, in his column Tom says that for some words he is "okay with discouraging them on campus". Yet other words being discouraged is the work of evil progressives trying to control our thoughts. Hypocricy? Of course. What else do we expect from Tom?

Tom McLaughlin said...

I have my own standards for what is offensive. Neither GLAAD nor you homosexual harpies will dictate what words I can or cannot use or allow here. This is my site.

If you're offended, too bad. Go somewhere else.

Gary said...

You are missing the point, Tom, which is how hypocritical you are being by saying it is fine for YOU, a private blogger, to have standards, and to ban certain words and allow others, but it is not ok for Duke, a private University to have standards.

How can you not see what a joke that makes you seem?

And NO, I am not offended by your tolerance, and frequent contributions to gay bashing. People like you and Ted Haggard obviously need to work out your issues in your own way, so it is more pity I feel for you.

Seems like Tom would like to be some sort of "Standards Czar" where he dictates to all what is acceptable and what isn't.

“Neither GLAAD nor you homosexual harpies will dictate what words I can or cannot use or allow here.” You sound like a reactionary partisan playing the victim card. No one is dictating or even suggesting what words you can and can’t write. You allow one offensive comment but delete another, yet you’re critical of others suggesting what is and isn’t offensive.

Seriously? deleted? The funny thing is I didn't make any racist/inappropriate comments!! Not one!

Just pointed out facts and truth! Can't handle the truth huh? So delete it?!!? Pathetic.

Try ignoring reality all you want. It isn't changing. In fact, it's getting worse. But you are allowing it, so to bitch about it while condoning it is a waste of time and energy.

I can see why Tom will occassionaly write a non-political column - he must get allfully tired of taking such a beating week after week and always being exposed as a hypocrite. Constantly playing the fool must wear on him to the extent he needs to take a break with wine or photos.

Hypocrite Defined:

a person who claims or pretends to have certain beliefs about what is right (such as the freedom to use whatever words you want, no matter how it might offend) but
who behaves in a way that disagrees with those beliefs (such as not allowing others to use certain words that they themselves deem offensive)

Seeing as Tom approves of gay bashing, perhaps he should move to a part of the world such as Iran or Nigeria where it is not only acceptable, but highly encouraged…he would feel right at home!

Hundreds of people have staged a demonstration near the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in al-Quds (Jerusalem) to condemn the hate attacks against local Muslims and Christians in the occupied territories.

Muslims, Christians and Jews held a joint protest on Sunday night to slam the spiraling wave of the so-called “price tag” attacks carried out by radical Israelis. The protesters called on the Tel Aviv regime to take actions against such attacks.

Israeli vandals regularly attack Christian and Muslim properties as well as their holy sites in the West Bank and East al-Quds. The extremists say the “price tag” attacks are carried out against any Israeli policy “to reduce the presence of settlers and settlements on the occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).”

Israeli officials have rarely taken any action against “price tag” assailants.

Critics say the Israeli government has not taken enough measures to prevent the attacks.

Also on Sunday, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemned the hate crime.

The United Nations says there have been 2,100 such attacks since 2006, when the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) started the counting, with the annual overalls up from 115 in 2006 to 399 last year.

HOW ISRAEL TREATS PALESTINIAN CHILDREN

"It's longstanding Israeli practice. They're treated like adults. Each year, about 700 are lawlessly arrested.

They're detained. They're brutally interrogated. They're prosecuted in military courts.

They have no legitimacy whatever. They give kangaroos a bad name.

Since 2,000, over 9,000 Palestinian children under age 18 were treated this way. Many became traumatized. No-holds-barred brutality defines official Israeli policy.

On May 12, Defence for Children International Palestine (DCI-P) headlined "Rising numbers of Palestinian children subjected to solitary confinement."

They're isolated for "interrogation purposes," said DCI-P. Over 21% of them are treated this way. It's 2% more than in 2012.

In 2013, DCI-P obtained 98 sworn affidavits. It did so from Palestinian children aged 12 - 17.

Ayed Abu Eqtaish is DCI-P's Accountability Program director. "The use of isolation against Palestinian children as an interrogation tool is a growing trend," he said.

"This is a violation of children's rights and the international community must demand justice and accountability."

DCI-P said interrogating Palestinian children this way aims for forced confessions. They threatened to do so or else.

Isolation ranges from around 10 to 28 days. It continues as long as it takes to terrorize kids to confess to crimes they didn't commit.

Former UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights Richard Falk condemned the practice earlier.

"This pattern of abuse by Israel is grave," he said.

"It is inhumane, cruel, degrading, and unlawful, and, most worryingly, it is likely to adversely affect the mental and physical health of underage detainees."

Isolated children are held in Petah, Tikva and Kishon detention centers. They're in Ashkelon-based Shikma prison.

They have no contact with family, friends or legal counsel. Transferring them out of Palestine violates Fourth Geneva's Article 76. It states:

"Protected persons accused of offences shall be detained in the occupied country, and if convicted they shall serve their sentences therein."

"They shall, if possible, be separated from other detainees and shall enjoy conditions of food and hygiene which will be sufficient to keep them in good health, and which will be at least equal to those obtaining in prisons in the occupied country."..."

At some point this becomes insulting to ones intelligence.
Money to Palestine? Huh, is it anywhere near the 8 million we give each day to israel? Eight...million... In military aide....a day...uhm.....
And your bs claims about pigs and dogs can easily be topped by israeli behavior. Especially israleis mocking Jesus. Even on national israeli tv!!

And could you please count the dual Palestinian members of the United States congress for me? I forget. Seems to me a foreign country sitting in our congress may have some influence on policy and reality? Nah....nevermind....look the other way...that's not treason....nah..that's perfectly ok.

Questioning my sources? Are you trying to say I am lying or trying to minimize the reality of this evil behavior towards little kids by big bad israel. Mighty Christian of ya. Condoning child torture. Good thing I am on my way to church. I will pray for you. And israel.

You can see the evidence in the video pasted in a previous post--- what it means to be a friend of israel. Video evidence. Real evidence.

Have fun appeasing those Christian values you treasure so much...

When's the last time a palestinain strapped a Bomb to his chest by the way? Hyperbolic much? You want to start comparing war crimes and illegal atrocities committed by these two peoples? Let's go. I'll win hands down. Not even a contest..

Feel free to comment on what I posted about the children. And how israel treats them. Gods chosen, huh?

Reality, huh? Kinda stands in stark contrast doesn't it?

"Nurit Peled-Elhanan, an Israeli academic, mother and political radical, summons up an image of rows of Jewish schoolchildren, bent over their books, learning about their neighbours, the Palestinians. But, she says, they are never referred to as Palestinians unless the context is terrorism.

They are called Arabs. "The Arab with a camel, in an Ali Baba dress. They describe them as vile and deviant and criminal, people who don't pay taxes, people who live off the state, people who don't want to develop," she says. "The only representation is as refugees, primitive farmers and terrorists. You never see a Palestinian child or doctor or teacher or engineer or modern farmer."

Peled-Elhanan, a professor of language and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has studied the content of Israeli school books for the past five years, and her account, Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education, is to be published in the UK this month. She describes what she found as racism– but, more than that, a racism that prepares young Israelis for their compulsory military service.

"People don't really know what their children are reading in textbooks," she said. "One question that bothers many people is how do you explain the cruel behaviour of Israeli soldiers towards Palestinians, an indifference to human suffering, the inflicting of suffering. People ask how can these nice Jewish boys and girls become monsters once they put on a uniform. I think the major reason for that is education. So I wanted to see how school books represent Palestinians."

In "hundreds and hundreds" of books, she claims she did not find one photograph that depicted an Arab as a "normal person". The most important finding in the books she studied – all authorised by the ministry of education – concerned the historical narrative of events in 1948, the year in which Israel fought a war to establish itself as an independent state, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled the ensuing conflict.

The killing of Palestinians is depicted as something that was necessary for the survival of the nascent Jewish state, she claims. "It's not that the massacres are denied, they are represented in Israeli school books as something that in the long run was good for the Jewish state. For example, Deir Yassin [a pre-1948 Palestinian village close to Jerusalem] was a terrible slaughter by Israeli soldiers. In school books they tell you that this massacre initiated the massive flight of Arabs from Israel and enabled the establishment of a Jewish state with a Jewish majority. So it was for the best. Maybe it was unfortunate, but in the long run the consequences for us were good."

Children, she says, grow up to serve in the army and internalise the message that Palestinians are "people whose life is dispensable with impunity. And not only that, but people whose number has to be diminished.".......

And my sources are legitimate. By the way. No bs here. I address your questions and posts. I don't deflect and ignore. I don't run from truth. I don't make shit up because I am too afraid to acknowledge reality.

"DCI-Palestine collected 98 sworn affidavits from Palestinian children aged 12 to 17 in 2013.

“The use of isolation against Palestinian children as an interrogation tool is a growing trend,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, Accountability Program director at DCI-Palestine. “This is a violation of children’s rights and the international community must demand justice and accountability.”

DCI-Palestine’s research overwhelmingly suggests that the use of solitary confinement against Palestinian child detainees in the Israeli military detention system is employed almost solely for interrogation purposes. The apparent purpose is to obtain a confession or to gather intelligence on other individuals.

Globally, children and juvenile offenders are often held in isolation either as a disciplinary measure or to separate them from adult populations. The use of solitary confinement by Israeli authorities does not appear to be related to any disciplinary, protective, or medical rationale or justification.

During a period of just under two years, from January 2012 to December 2013, DCI-Palestine collected 40 affidavits from child detainees that detailed solitary confinement.

Children held in solitary confinement spent an average of 10 days in isolation. The longest period of confinement documented in a single case was 29 days in 2012, and 28 days in 2013..."

http://www.dci-palestine.org/documents/rising-numbers-palestinian-children-subjected-solitary-confinement
---------------------

morality and ethics? I just simply ask myself, what would Jesus do? What would Jesus say to gods chosen treating children like this? What would Jesus say to a country who claims to be of chosen people yet act like anything but? I think Jesus would expect more from a people claiming such a massive responsibility.

And I expect any answer you post to address ALL points raised in these three posts of mine. ALL. No deflect and ignore bs.

I see you recently wrote about your grand kids. Good thin they don't live in Palestine, huh? Where innocent little kids get shot for no reason. And humanitarian Christians like yourself cheerlead and make excuses for such abhorrent evil. Sleep well, do ya?
Sorry but the world has awoken to this bs. You can't play the victim anymore. The truth is bare for all to see. You can switch sides and may want to. Unless you want to be known for supporting such sin, such vile behavior.

"New video evidence showing the fatal shooting of two Palestinian teenagers last week strongly indicates that neither of the boys posed a threat to Israeli forces at the time they were targeted, supporting claims they were "unlawfully killed".

The footage was caught by a CCTV camera installed above a nearby office and shows the deaths of Nadeem Nawara, 17, and Mohammad Salameh, 16, who were both shot through the chest in separate incidents just over an hour apart.

The two boys are seen walking near the building, apparently unarmed, with the second teenager killed while walking away from positions occupied by Israeli security forces outside Ofer prison in the West Bank.

The footage appears to be supported by Palestinian hospital reports seen by the Guardian and witness accounts of the shooting, including that of Mohamed al-Azi, a 15-year-old who survived being shot through the chest.

The composite picture presented by the evidence points to the conclusion that the two teenagers were between 200 and 250 metres from the soldiers who shot them – allegedly with live fire – and were not involved in throwing stones at the time of their deaths. The latter issue is critical because under the Israeli military's Open Fire Regulations, live rounds are only allowed to be used against stone throwers when they pose an imminent danger to life.

In the first incident caught on camera, a figure with a backpack walks across a street towards a group of others standing next to a wall before stumbling and slumping to the ground. An hour and 13 minutes later, another figure crosses the street from the opposite direction and also falls to the ground. Journalists who were at the scene last Thursday confirmed the video showed the fatal shootings.

The Israeli military claimed the footage had been edited in a "biased and tendentious way" and did not show the violence its soldiers encountered....."
---------the guardian

Yup, they lied. And got caught doing so. The chosen! Lying about child murder!

Hahaha...let me guess, you'll reply with some bs about throwing Molotov cocktails...hahaha....

I will pray for all you who back this evil. There is time. You don't have to support the lie. The world is waking up. Maybe you should too? Stone throwers vs. American backed miltary. Huh......
