Leftist Legerdemain

The Obama/Catholic “contraception” brouhaha has many dimensions not visible at first glance. It’s more than Obama forcing the Catholic Church to pay for birth control, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. It’s the nihilistic, 21st century left forcing the oldest institution on earth - the Catholic Church - to approve what they’ve fought against for two millennia. It’s a political subterfuge as well.

The Church believes the primary purpose of sex is procreation. The left believes sex is for recreation - not in the sense of “creating something new,” but in the sense of “a diversion affording relaxation and enjoyment.” The left divorced sex and procreation.

Should pregnancy result, the left sees it as a disease to be “cured” by abortion.
The Catholic Church believes sexuality should be exclusive to marriage and that married couples do nothing artificial to prevent conception. The Church approves only Natural Family Planning, which requires acute familiarity with a woman’s menstrual cycle to pinpoint periods of fertility. It counsels abstinence when she’s fertile if pregnancy is to be avoided, or coitus when pregnancy is desired. The left ridicules Natural Family Planning as “rhythm.” It pushes artificial contraception before and/or during every episode of sexual intercourse, and abortion after. It sees pregnancy is a negative side-effect of sex. The left calls abstinence repressive. It pushes sexual experimentation with a variety of techniques and a variety of partners - the more, the better. All this, they insist, is liberating.

The Church teaches that the left’s sexual agenda is dehumanizing.

The left - and the Obama Administration is its epitome - uses government to legitimize, propagate and finance its agenda. Obama’s latest gambit is a calculated move to disparage the Catholic view of sex and life. Consider that health insurance doesn’t cover plastic surgery because it’s an elective procedure. But so is contraception. So is abortion. Why should they be covered?

“Oh, but insurance covers Viagra for men,” say leftists, “so it should cover birth control pills for women too.” They’re correct to point out that Viagra doesn’t contribute to mens’ health. It’s elective, and men should buy it themselves. Ditto for women and birth control. Viagra costs about $5 per pill. Generic birth control pills cost about $20 per month. Both are cheap and both are optional. Neither belongs in the realm of health insurance.

That conservatives would object to paying for everyone’s contraception is incomprehensible to the liberal/left as exemplified by MSNBC’S Andrea Mitchell in her recent interview with Foster Friess, a Rick Santorum backer:

"This contraceptive thing,” said Friess. My gosh, it's so inexpensive. Back in my day, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly.”

Mitchell was speechless. "Excuse me,” she said. “I'm just trying to catch my breath from that.”

The left insists that contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs be required by government because the mandate confers approval, just as homosexual “marriage” confers societal approval of homosexual acts which the Catholic Church teaches are sinful. That’s what this is all about. The left wants government to be arbiter of right and wrong. It wants government to supplant religion when adjudicating morality. They insist that to oppose mandatory contraception coverage is to be “against women’s health.”

Pregnancy as disease.

Columnist Ann Coulter takes it further:

Just as liberals have turned the Constitution into a vehicle for achieving all the left-wing policies they could never get Americans to vote for, now they are going to use "insurance" for the same purpose. Their new method doesn't even require them to get votes from five justices on the Supreme Court. The secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, will do it all on her own.

Anything close to the beating heart of feminism is about to become a mandatory part of insurance coverage: fertility treatments, chemical sensitivities, a year's leave of absence for fathers after the birth of a child, attention deficit disorder, massages, aromatherapy, watching MSNBC, sex change operations, gender reassignment surgery, gender re-reassignment surgery.

What Coulter didn’t say above is that public funding of abortion is next. Few doubt that, should Obama be reelected, mandatory public funding of abortion on demand will be added by fiat from Kathleen Sebelius.

In a column titled “The Libertine Police State,” George Weigel put it this way:

By effectively sundering sexual expression from procreation, modern contraceptives have done something their less-effective predecessors were unable to do for millennia: They have created a contraceptive culture that identifies fertility with disease and willful infertility with “health.” Those who celebrate that culture are not interested in compromise: They are interested in having everyone pay for what they want, and in levying serious penalties on those who won’t truckle to their will.

The Obama campaign realizes that pushing abortion is a losing issue. They have the pro-abortion vote locked up already, so now they’re changing the debate to contraception, which most Americans approve. The campaign has millions of Americans wondering if Republicans would outlaw contraception instead of thinking about how Democrats are bankrupting our country.

The Obama Administration is the epitome of the left? Are you kidding me? Most on the left are very frustrated with the administration for being such moderates. Are you really that out of touch?

Then you say "The left wants government to be arbiter of right and wrong", but isn't one of your main points that abortion is wrong? So isn't it, in this case, the Right that wants to be the arbiter of right and wrong?

Excellent article, Tom! Left unsaid is the basic fact forgotten these day that nature requires two things, both halves of one whole - survival - through nourishment in the short term and through procreation in the long. The left is trying to change the rules and has been destroying us ever since.C

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I feel that birth control and/or abortion, whatever ones political leanings, is a matter for individual decision making, not governmental interference. It is regrettable that the debate on insurance coverage is clearly geared to the bottom line which will determine the "best" political outcome.

A question for aliledar:

The population is now at 7 Billion and skyrocketing - how exactly is our survival jeopardized?

I mean besides the obvious - which is overpopulation.

I do not want to pay for your abortion. The Commandments of God and the American Constitution guarantee me the right, the duty to live by my conscience to choose life and liberty. Obama does not have the right to force me to pay for immoral choices made by others ie. abortions or organizations who perform them. I'm not a catholic but I am a Christian and an American.

Wait a second...so, when priests molest/rape little boys it is for procreation? That makes sense.
And when the right wing "conservative" is tapping his toes in Minneapolis it's for purposes of procreation? Or having sex with male prostitute? Brilliant!

You have some nerve....maybe your next article should be about this:
Some 200 Catholic priests suspected of sexual abuse are living undetected in communities across California, according to an attorney who represents hundreds of plaintiffs who sued the LA Archdiocese for molestation they say was inflicted on them by priests and clergy of the church.

It is ok to bugger little children so long as you claim to have repented after you get caught - which I'm sure those priests have done.

Heck, you can even get a wacky portion of the population to consider you for president even though you have been shown to be an unethical, immoral scumbag.....just say the lord has forgiven you!

Confusing religion with morality seems to be a big problem with a lot of people.

There is a scent of hypocrisy here.
Oh, you really only have sex when conception is guaranteed to be the result. You never have sex for the sheer pleasure of it. Ahh your wife is beyond the childbearing age, have you stopped having sex? I understand the abortion issue is a problem, but the rest is just right wing and Catholic Dogma.

We are at perhaps the most crucial time in our history.
Since 2000 we have seen a false flag "terror" event that has changed the course of our lives. George Orwell was indeed correct. Cameras on every corner, NADA, SOPA, ACTA, The Patriot Act, illegal wars, war mongering, fear mongering, big banks doing what they will carte blanche, the murder of us citizens (one a 16 yr. old boy) by drones, I have to repeat that one--the murder of us citizens via drones with NO due process, the TSA, planting a patsy like the "underwear bomber" to further the agenda, the number of US troops that have committed suicide in the last two years is higher than the number killed in combat, etc. etc. etc. and on and on.....

But let's talk about abortion and the antiquated and irrelevant catholic church. Pederasts and perverts (oh yeah, and a nazi) swimming in hypocrisy and lies. Who cares about the constitution? The bill of rights? Going to war illegally? Letting the president run guns in Mexico that kill US citizens? No big deal, right.
Now those abortions. That's something to talk about---real pressing issue....Not.

Thanks Tom---It's easy to see you fall for the lamestream media talking points like a trained chimp. The country is going to hell and all you can do is play pretend? Democrats vs. republican non sense? You really do believe Barry Soetoro is a liberal? Wow, condoning the murder of US citizens now qualifies as liberal?

Not too many people left that think Barry is a liberal.
Well, not the ones who can think critically that is.
Divide and conquer. You've been conquered. Keep yapping about the church and abortion---the rest of us will try and fight the new world order.

I would like to inform the ignorant commenter of a few points he or she is ignorant of. Abortion has been accepted by our country as illegal and wrong much longer than it has been so called legal and right. Also if you don't want government affecting any moral type issues than it should be ok to kill anyone not just unborn babies? As far as the over population comment, do the math, don't just watch msnbc. The world isn't remotely over populated to put it very mildly. At the current rate of decline we are going, by the year 2075 we will be back to 7billion people and continuing to decline yearly. Lastly you are trying to say the Catholic church teaches homosexual acts with boys is acceptable. Nothing could be further from the truth. The church teaches exactly opposite to that. There unfortunately are bad people everywhere including in the church, sad but true. Let us look at this from a different angle, if you look at the facts there are many more sexual abuses in the public school system than the church, are we suppose to think the schools condone this behavior, of course not. So don't make the ignorant argument against the church. The reason abortion is the crux of the issue is we are talking about a meltdown of society. When we take the sanctity of life out of the equation you are left with no moral backbone to deal with the people that make up society. Who is more important than who etc. If life isn't important who decides who lives good and who lives bad or who kills who? The sanctity of life or as of late the lack there of is why so many people are suffering. It is not about people anymore it is about things, money, comfort, me me me at the expense of you, you, and you. That for some reason is not painfully clear to a lot of people these days. Sad times indeed, that's why we pray.

Birth control should never be abortion, as the heart is pumping and the brain is functioning at 8 weeks.

What I can't figure out, is why a President is involved in birth control?????? How is it possible, that in the year 2012, the President of the United States is involved in BIRTH CONTROL?????? WHAT???? Don't we, as a nation, have more important issues we need to be concerned with, and involved in? Like the Middle East and nuclear power? The skyrocketing price of gas? The lack of jobs, and the plummeting economy? But, we have a president who is legislating BIRTH CONTROL???? Is he bent on demising the population of Caucasians? Because we know that the Caucasians are the ones who have been using birth control and getting abortions for the past 2 or 3 generations, stripping our future of it's mathematicians and scientists. The only ones left who will be having children will be the Latinos and the Muslims.

Hey anonymous, why is the president involved with birth control an Dennis the media complicit? Great question!!!
This is what the media should be doing---- be critical and question. Because this is a crock of you know what. Birth control? With the myriad issues we need to focus on!!! Birth control? We should all be insulted and outraged. Obama should be in jail for fast and furious anyhow. But the lame morons in this country would rather watch American idoli guess?

Just goes to prove that this county has been

Ron is referring to a study about sexual misconduct in schools. In order to say that the abuse is worse than in churches they include everything from innapropriate remarks to eyeing cleavage.

I wonder if Ron can come up with any cases of teachers being protected and moved to other school districts to rape more children, as is the culture in the church.

To reply to anonymous briefly, no, the world's population is set to decline because so many countries have zero or minus population growth. But that isn't the point. The nature of sex for survival isn't for mankind's survival as a species but for each individual's survival and it is pretty unnatural for a person to wish to be a biological dead end, unconsciously or not.

Barb Miller: l don't want to pay for the endless wars that you Christians enjoy fighting. It seems your conscience is mighty selective. Your conscience isn't troubled by killing children, babies, or fetuses in foreign countries. Your conscience isn't troubled by the many children dying in this country - or the millions living in homeless shelters. I suspect your conscience comes with a big on and off switch.

I don't think I've ever felt sorrier for Mrs. McLaughlin than I do after reading this column.
